Sonya McKeever Obituary

Sonya Yvette Scales McKeever, affectionately known as “Song” was born July 23, 1961, to Orlando Scales, Sr. and Barbara Scales in Winston-Salem, NC.  She grew up in Winston-Salem in the Boston Project housing development. She attended the WSFCS System and later graduated from Forsyth Technical Community College with her GED.

After receiving her GED, she began working in the WS/FC School System in multiple departments including work at the Career Center, food service/cafeteria, and drove the school/activity buses for many of the schools for over 25 years. After working for the school system, she continued to spend time with her family.

“Song” lived her life to the fullest and always kept her smile. With her jokes and loud music, she knew how to keep you laughing and make you feel good. She enjoyed cooking and was known by family as a “foody” and did not mind letting you know if something was wrong with your cooking in a loving way. You could catch her many times either shopping or having fun at the sweepstakes. Sonya was a dedicated grandma that enjoyed spoiling all her grandchildren. She lived for her husband, kids, grandchildren, and her family. “Song” was looked to as the “big sister” that you could always lean on.

On Monday March 7, 2022, God dispatched his angels and carried Sonya to her new heavenly home. Preceding her in death were her parents Orlando and Barbara Scales, Sr.; Grandmother Bernice Davis; Grandfather Clarence James; one brother Orlando Scales, Jr.; and a nephew Kelvin “WOO” James, Jr.

Sonya leaves to cherish memories her loving husband and companion of over 40 years, James McKeever, Jr.; two daughters, Cora McKeever and Barbara (Marquise) Crosby of Winston Salem, NC; two sons, James McKeever III and James (Miasia) McKeever, V, of Winston Salem, NC; eight grandchildren, Samahd Moses, Samaurie Moses, Braylen Washington, Madison Crosby, Marquise Crosby, Jr., Skylar McKeever, James McKeever, VI, and Jasiah McKeever all of Winston-Salem, NC.; four brothers, Darryl (Vivian) Scales, Kelvin Scales and Dykar Scales, Daryl Bannister all of Winston Salem, NC; two sisters, Karen Scales, and Kelly Simmons all of Winston Salem, NC.; two uncles, Willie (Evette) Hauser and Mikle Davis; three aunts, Deresa (Charles) Pace, Stephanie Plater and Brenda Drummond all of Winston Salem, NC; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
