Obituary

Margaret Marie Covington affectionately known as “Maree” was born July 8, 1940 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Beulah Searcy Griffin.

She was educated by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.  She attended Brown-Woodland Elementary School, 14th Street Middle School and graduated from Atkins High School Class of 1958.  She received certification from Russell’s Commercial School for Secretarial Administration, Graduated from Goodwill Business School and Forsyth Technical Community College.

Once she completed her secondary education her career spanned from working at North Carolina Baptist Hospital now known as Atrium Health, Darity Studio and retiring from Cintas in Textile. “Maree” also worked in private catering using her passion for cooking.

Margaret accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at the age of 12.  She joined Beulah Baptist Church in 1969. During her time there she served on the Usher Board as an Usher, President, Secretary, and Treasure for over 50 years. She recently joined Messiah Community Church under the leadership of Bishop Frank Robinson. Reading her bible and participating in church gave her much joy.

Outside of work and church Margaret had special hobbies. She enjoyed arts and crafts including sewing, crocheting, and ceramics. Creating many pieces of artwork gave her much joy. With a giving heart she devoted her time to volunteering at Kimberly Terrance. “Maree” was known for winning several awards for her flowers and community service. She also found joy in her downtime spending it with her family, cross word puzzles and even surfing on Facebook.

On the morning of Saturday March 18, 2023, Margaret Marie Covington took her heavenly flight home surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her mother Beulah Searcy Griffin and siblings Ralph Griffin, Bessie Griffin, William Griffin, Sandra Griffin and Wayne Griffin.

Margaret is survived by her children, Veleria Hasan, Kenneth (Ellen Wallace) Searcy, Brandon (Lisa Irby) Searcy, Milton Searcy, Ella Covington, Linda (Abie) Covington-Ladson, Katrina Covington, Elizabeth Ransby and Tawanna Ransby; grandchildren, Darrell Tart, Jr.,  Naim Hasan Jr., Micah Covington, Brennen Houg, Kier Irby, Ciara Ladson, TeKenvila Brown, Kiana (Montrel) Ladson-Wingate, Kira Ladson, Tekeyla Brown, TeAnndela Brown-Hughes, Tierra (Zachary) Wallace-Taylor, Garland (Kiante’) Wallace III, Brian Wallace, Tamerra Wallace, Deshara Myers and Teron Gaskin and 30 great-grandchildren; siblings Beulah Hoover, James Griffin and Bertha Griffin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
