Carol Lynn Rettmann Gainey, 63, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025 at her residence. She was born on July 23, 1961, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Carol was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.
Carol was the daughter of Sherwood and Flora Rettmann, and she grew up in a loving household that fostered her gentle spirit and compassionate nature. She was preceded in death by her father, Sherwood Rettmann, whose legacy of kindness and dedication lived on in Carol. Her memory will continue to be cherished by her devoted husband, Stephen Gainey, with whom she shared a loving marriage since 1977. Together, they created a beautiful life filled with love and laughter.
Carol was a proud mother to her daughter, Allison Gainey, who was the light of her life. She poured her heart and soul into supporting Allison, nurturing her dreams, and creating countless cherished memories. Carol was also a beloved sister to her brother, Tommy Rettmann, and her sister, Lisa (Ricky) Shouse. She held a special place in the hearts of her family, including her brother-in-law, David Gainey, and her nephew, Ryan Shouse, who will all miss her deeply.
A graduate of the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools System, Carol was a dedicated professional who worked at AT&T, formerly known as BellSouth, as an operator. She retired in 2012, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.
Carol had many hobbies and interests that reflected her vibrant personality. She had a passion for crafts, spending countless hours creating beautiful pieces that delighted her family and friends. In addition to her creative pursuits, she was an avid reader, finding joy in the worlds that books opened up to her. Those who knew Carol will remember her for her heart of gold, her infectious laughter, and her love for engaging in conversations, often sharing stories and catching up with loved ones over the phone.
Her life will be celebrated on February 8, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Grace Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. Family and friends are invited to honor Carol’s memory and the incredible life she lived.
While Carol may no longer be with us, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched. We take comfort in knowing that she has found peace and will forever shine brightly among the stars. She will be deeply missed but always remembered. Rest in peace, dear Carol.
