Mrs. Betty Jean Ingram Bennett was born February 27, 1936 to Anderson Ingram and Carrie P. McDuffie in Winston-Salem, NC.
Betty attended the local public schools and graduated from Atkins High School, Class of 1951. She furthered her education at Winston Salem Teachers College (now known as Winston Salem State University) and graduated May 19, 1958. After graduation, she taught in Virginia for three years. Betty returned to Winston-Salem, NC and was employed for several years at L. Roberts Ladies Fashion until it closed.
Betty was a faithful woman of God. She was a dedicated member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she served on the Deacon’s Ministry, Ladies Progressive Ministry, was Superintendent of Sunday School, former president of the Usher’s Ministry, and member of the Young Adult Choir. She also served as former president of the United Usher’s Board, and was affiliated with various other ministries in the city.
Outside of her career and church involvement, she loved participating in the Winston-Salem senior games, going to the Winston-Salem Lake YMCA for exercise class, Silver SneakersGroup, participating with the Sophisticated Ladies, and spending time with her family and friends.
On the morning of August 10, 2023, Betty Jean Ingram Bennett was called from labor to reward. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Gladys Turner, Anderson Ingram Jr., Jenny B. Petree; and her husbands, James Berry and Roosevelt Bennett.
She leaves to cherish many dear and loving memories, her children, Wayne (Desiree Graham) Berry, David (Grace) Berry, Leslie Berry (Willie Edwards), Stacy (Rodney) Byers, Patricia Stubbs, Cynthia Diana Acker, and Roselinda Thomas; sister, Geraldine Scales; brother Melvin (Olvia) Ingram; grandchildren, Chris Berry, Jasmine Berry, Candace Berry, Nicole Berry, Carmen Berry, Keova Darcus, David Berry Jr, Anthony Berry, and Chantal Brown; a host of greatgrands; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
