Richard A. Mickens was born on June 1, 1954, to William “Bill” Gray and Nannie Lee Mickens. On December 27, 2025 at 7:59 P.M., the Lord reached down and called home His faithful servant, Apostle Richard A. Mickens. He was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and later attended Forsyth Technical Community College, where he earned a degree in Business and Accounting.
A dedicated worker from the age of 12, Richard held many roles throughout his life—from wood and coal delivery to J.A. Brown Fish Market, Winston Leaf Tobacco Co., Hooker Furniture, Goodwill Industries, and the City of Winston-Salem, where he retired. After retirement, he found his passion in truck driving, starting with Jubbacar Trucking becoming well known across the CB band as “Chocolate Drop” and “The Prodigal Son.” He formed lifelong friendships, especially with his best friend, Scottie White, and loved traveling the country—particularly Eagle Pass, Texas. Richard accepted Christ in 1984 under the pastorate of Dr. R. L. Wise. He began preaching on December 29, 1996, under the late Pastor Theatis Lucas. He served faithfully under many great leaders, including Waldo Hauser and Elder L. McCarther. He became an Elder under Apostle Wallace Gaither, helping to establish New True Deliverance Church Of God on October 1, 1999. His powerful motto was: “LET US NOT GO TO HELL FROM HERE.”
He later returned to serve under Apostle Gaither and eventually joined Greater Abba Father Church Ministries under Pastor Scottie Isaiah White, where he remained until his health declined. Richard met the love of his life, Bertha Jackson in 1967, and they were united in marriage on February 22, 1980.
Their family grew with sons Richard and Robert Mickens, daughter Dena Mickens, and later three additional children blessed to them in 1985: Michael J. Davis, Shaunta Davis, and Lakentry D. Davis.
He is preceded in death by his fathers, William B. Gray and Jack Jackson, his mothers Nannie Lee Mickens and Wilma B. Jackson, his brother George Mickens, and his sister Gladys Jones.
Richard leaves to cherish wonderful memories, his wife, Bertha Mickens; children, Richard (Bridgette) Fletcher, Michael (Shemaine) Davis, Lakentry (Debra) Davis, Dena (Stefano, Sr.) Buffert, and Shaunta (Richard) Davis; along with his god-children, Michelle (James) Miller and Tammy (Al) Gibson, Calvin Brown, Terrance Juvi Manokey; siblings, Alice Partlow, Robert Lee Mickens, Nannie Wright, Toby Mickens, Rosa Mobley, Londell (Samellia) Nesbit; grandchildren, Sakoiya Funderburk, Dontae (Mekaila Blackwell) Mickens, , Richard (Erin) Fletcher III, Michael (Karla) Fletcher, Janiyah (Ced) Mickens, Rashard Warren, Bre’Anna Fletcher, Rashaun Wright, Lateria Davis, Epic Davis, Stefano Buffert, Jr., and Shaunta’s twelve children—will forever hold him in their hearts; great-grandchildren Eliana Fletcher, Nevaeh Mickens, Kyng Buffert and Noelle Blackwell will also carry his legacy forward; he is further survived by devoted in-laws, Douglas (Mabel) Jackson, Robert (Angela) Jackson, and Lisa Davis; along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly.
